Washington’s capital can be your working classroom

  • Opportunity to study and work for an entire semester, and immerse yourself in the legal scene, in Washington’s capital city
  • Designed for students interested in legislation, administrative law and public policy
  • Ability to earn all semester credits through specific courses, seminars and externship placements
  • Learn from prominent alumni and other professionals with substantial legal and legislative experience in state government, including agency chiefs
  • Offered each spring to coincide with the state’s legislative session
  • Excellent option for students who live in the South Sound and would like to stay closer to home

Two options:  full-time or part-time

Full-time option - Externship track

  • Complete all of your semester credits in Olympia by obtaining and completing an approved full-time externship
  • Semester in Olympia program is primarily intended if you are completing an externship in Thurston County but is also open on a space-available basis for externships in surrounding areas (Vice Dean approval necessary)
  • In addition to an externship, you also complete a one-credit externship seminar in Olympia, either the Judicial Externship Seminar or the Olympia Public Policy, Legislation, and Regulation Externship Seminar
  • If your externship is in a substantive area more properly covered by another seminar held in Seattle, you may participate via video conference (subject to approval by Externship Program office)

Part-time option - Externship and Government Coursework Track

  • Includes two courses offered in Olympia to earn 6 credits total
  • Undertake a part-time externship at an approved site while also enrolling in one of two Olympia-based externship seminar, earning you 6 to 9 credits
  • You can scale your work obligations to the amount of credits you want or need to obtain
