If you want to learn how to be a lawyer, participate in externships. If you’re looking to network with real attorneys and staff at real law firms or places of employment, participate in externships. If you want to open doors for employment following law school, participate in externships. If you want to save money, and start your career earlier, participate in externships.

The nature of the work required a lot of research and summarizing of lengthy documents. But the company was not waiting for me to churn out an academic essay. They wanted quick, practical, thoughtful, efficient solutions.

After an exhaustive search for externships and lack of availability due to the COVID 19 Pandemic, Professor Dutton worked her magic and approached me with an opportunity to extern with the Washington State Office of Administrative Hearings in Olympia.

I didn’t come to law school to prove anything or to please my family. I came to law school to become a lawyer, and in my externships, I actually felt like I was one.
