Inaugural Annual Distinguished Lecture in International Law: Professor Harold Hongju Koh, Sterling Professor of International Law, Yale Law School

Seattle University School of Law hosted Professor Harold Hongju Koh, the Sterling Professor of International Law at Yale Law School. Professor Koh delivered the inaugural Annual Distinguished Lecture in International Law titled, “Is Our President a National Security Threat?” drawing upon Koh's recently published book, "The National Security Constitution in the 21st Century."

The recently-launched Annual Distinguished Lecture Series in International Law will bring to the law school prominent international lawyers from the legal academy and practicing bar who are engaged in cutting-edge issues in public and private international law.

Professor Koh is one of the country’s leading experts in public and private international law, national security law, and human rights. He has served in numerous roles in the U.S. government under five administrations, including as U.S. assistant secretary of state for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor under President Bill Clinton, as the 22nd legal advisor to the U.S. Department of State in the Obama administration, and as a senior advisor in the Office of the Legal Advisor to the U.S. Department of State in the Biden administration. He co-founded the Allard K. Lowenstein International Human Rights Law Clinic at Yale Law School, where he has represented victims of human rights abuses in U.S. federal courts and before various international tribunals. He is the author of numerous books and articles, including his most recent, "The National Security Constitution in the 21st Century" (2024)

The Technology, Innovation Law, and Ethics (TILE) Program

In this webinar, we hosted Professor LeighAnne Thompson to learn about how lawyers are using artificial intelligence in practice, particularly with respect to access to justice. Professor Thompson teaches courses in the law school’s cutting-edge Technology, Innovation Law, and Ethics (TILE) program, leveraging our location among global technology leaders. Professor Thompson shared highlights from her course “AI and the Practice of Law,” provided an overview of the unique TILE curriculum and courses available in the Tech LLM program track, and engaged in Q&A about how the TILE program can help students achieve their goals.

Hard and Soft Regulatory Tools for AI Governance

Artificial intelligence is increasingly impacting every domain of human life, including transportation, the workplace, the home, health care, education, entertainment, and peace and security. In this webinar, we welcomed Professor Mark Chinen, who gave a survey of the spectrum of hard and soft tools used to regulate AI applications, as well as the actors who are using and developing these regulatory tools. Dean's Luminaries in Law Lecture & Conversation Series: Jeff Farrah ’07, Executive Director of the Autonomous Vehicle Industry Association

February 28, 2023

The law school recently hosted Jeff Farrah '07, Executive Director of the Autonomous Vehicle Industry Association, who joined us in conversation with law school Dean Anthony E. Varona as well as Amit Shukla, Dean of the College of Science and Engineering. Mr. Farrah, a 2007 graduate of Seattle University School of Law, leads the Autonomous Vehicle Industry Association (AVIA) as its executive director. AVIA represents the world’s leading technology, trucking, ridesharing, automotive, and transportation companies. Before joining AVIA, Mr. Farrah served as general counsel of the National Venture Capital Association, where he championed public policy to support the American entrepreneurial ecosystem and managed legal and operational aspects of the association. He also served as counsel to the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation and as general counsel to U.S. Senator Scott Brown. During the 2012 presidential election, he was a member of Senator Romney’s Trade Policy Advisory Committee.

Dean's Luminaries in Law Lecture & Conversation Series: Starbucks General Counsel Zabrina Jenkins

January 24, 2023

As a student at Seattle University School of Law, you will have many opportunities to interact with and meet leaders in various industries. Recently, Zabrina Jenkins, executive vice president and general counsel of Seattle-based company Starbucks, joined us in conversation with law school Dean Anthony E. Varona. Ms. Jenkins is executive vice president and general counsel for Starbucks, leading legal and regulatory affairs, global security, and ethics and compliance for the company. Additionally, Jenkins serves as an executive champion to the Starbucks Black Partner Network and an advisor to the diversity committee for the Law & Corporate Affairs department. At Starbucks since 2005, Jenkins previously held roles as senior vice president, deputy general counsel, interim chief ethics and compliance officer, lead legal advisor for Teavana, and was a core member of the Starbucks 2018 Philadelphia incident crisis management response team.

Human Rights & Tech: How Technology Facilitates Peace Negotiations

Clinic students Bisma Shoaib and Jay Conrad discussed their recent experience participating in real-life lawyering projects to help facilitate peace negotiations by using technology. As an LLM student, you have opportunities to work on actual cases and projects under the supervision of a professor. The discussion was moderated by Professor Ronald Slye. Professor Sital Kalantry, Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and International Programs, also answered questions about the LLM during the Q&A.

Financial Aid and Scholarships for International Students

As an international LLM student, you likely have many questions about how to pay for your LLM degree program. The resources available to you include private loans, payment plans, and outside scholarships that can help ease your financial burden as you work to further your legal education. Lynette Splinter, Director of Student Financial Services, and Natasha Murphy, Assistant Director of Student Financial Services, discussed how to navigate the process of obtaining private loans, how to search for outside scholarships, and information about payment plans. Kelli Rodriguez Currie, Director of International and Graduate Studies, and Professor Sital Kalantry, Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and International Programs, provided information about the LLM application process and answered questions.

David Zapolsky, General Counsel at Amazon, joined Seattle University School of Law Dean Anthony E. Varona in conversation about the life of a Fortune 5 general counsel and the future of e-commerce. The program was part of the Dean's Luminaries in Law Lecture & Conversation Series. Mr. Zapolsky shared his professional journey from law school to becoming the top legal officer/General Counsel at Amazon. He also discussed his ongoing and upcoming projects, including Amazon's pro bono work opportunities. Additionally, LLM student Bhavya Kandala asked Mr. Zapolsky to share his advice for international students pursuing LLMs in the U.S. and his response is at 47:45 minutes on the video recording.
