What led you to pursue a law degree and why did you choose Seattle U?

I want to pursue a law degree because I want to help restore justice to the criminal justice system. A law degree will allow me to combine the research and writing skills I have acquired from past careers with my passion for helping people from marginalized communities. As an attorney I will provide people with access to justice and elevate their voices. Seattle U’s commitment to social justice and the Flex JD part-time program made it my top and only choice as the place to pursue a law degree.

What have you found especially valuable during your legal education?

One of the most valuable parts of my legal education has been getting to know the other students in the Flex JD cohort. Being part of this cohort has been the most racially and socioeconomically diverse experience in my many years as a student. Not only are they all whip-smart, but collectively it is a supportive and collegial group. Everyone has each other’s backs and I know that we will all support each other for the length of our legal careers.

Another hugely valuable part of my legal education has been the experiential learning opportunities. My internships and externships have taught me so much about the legal profession and helped me home in on what I would like to do after I graduate. I have loved getting to observe and be supervised by seasoned judges and attorneys. My first day in a courtroom was like seeing the pages of my Evidence textbook come to life. I appreciate how well-known and well-respected Seattle U School of Law is within the legal community. I love meeting Seattle U alums and I am proud to be a Seattle U student.

What do you do outside of law school? What do you love about Seattle?

Outside of law school I enjoy chasing my two teenagers around the city and getting outside. I love that Seattle has all of the cultural offerings of a world-class city and that you can be walking a mountain trail or dipping your toes in salt water within a short drive of downtown. I also love the laid-back attitude of Seattleites. We take our work seriously, but we don’t take ourselves too seriously.

What advice would you offer a prospective law student?

You should arrive at law school with a good self-care routine and be vigilant about maintaining it throughout your time in school. Law school is a marathon, not a sprint. Taking care of yourself will not only make the experience of being in school more manageable, but it will also make you a better lawyer.
