What led you to pursue a law degree and why did you choose Seattle U?

I spent more than 20 years in human resources, and while I am proud of the work I did in that field, I wanted to find a different way to make a contribution. The impacts of income inequality and systemic oppression on the lives of people in this country have always troubled me, and I believe that the legal field has the potential to provide meaningful leverage for change in these areas, if we apply it towards that end. I was drawn to Seattle U’s focus on social justice, as well as the ability to enroll in the Flex JD program so that I could continue to work part time in an attempt to graduate with minimal debt.

What have you found especially valuable during your legal education?

I’ve had a lot of great experiences in law school at Seattle U, but my fellow students have been the most valuable part of the experience so far. The Flex JD cohort is made up of generous, thoughtful, and impressive classmates who support each other, hold Seattle U to a high standard, and make me laugh every day. I look forward to having them as peers long after we graduate.

What do you do outside of law school? What do you love about Seattle?

I currently live in the Skagit Valley, about 70 miles north of Seattle, but I grew up less than two miles from the Seattle U campus. I happened to be raised on an incredibly diverse block dominated by strong, smart women who cared passionately about politics, equality, and their community, neighbors, and friends. They instilled in me a healthy skepticism with regards to authority and a belief that we should be looking out for each other.

Take advantage of all the help you are offered and seek out the other students who care about the things you do.
