What did you do before law school, and what led to you pursue a law degree?

Prior to attending law school at Seattle U, I was an infectious disease research scientist. My experience with research, intellectual property, and as a safety officer collectively revealed multiple intersections between science and law where I could make a greater actualized impact in our community with a legal education than solely as a researcher. As the Infectious Disease Research Institute safety officer, I particularly enjoyed working with our legal department on policy changes that improved work environment safety. The most rewarding aspect of that work was employee appreciation for the improvements we implemented. This work revealed to me the impact I could make with a legal education for individuals as well as across an organization. My safety committee position was the final catalyst in my desire to pursue a legal education. I am looking forward to pursuing a legal career which uses my scientific background.

Why did you choose Seattle U?

Seattle U was my exclusive choice of law school. I was highly attracted to the evening program to pursue a legal education while concurrently managing my additional responsibilities. I was also interested in being among a cohort of students who had obligations outside of school and would bring real-world perspectives into class discussions. I felt the contribution of such students would lead to a more enriching educational experience.

What have you found most valuable during your law school education?

During my law school education, I have found the support for academic and career success most valuable. The professors have been wonderful and deeply committed to students' academic success. For example, professors will illuminate bar-tested material in class and tailor instruction toward practical application of the concepts. In addition, the Center for Professional Development has been incredibly supportive toward helping me secure legal experience opportunities as well as preparing me for post-graduate career success through resume review, mock interviews, and networking opportunities.

What do you do outside of law school? What do you love about Seattle?

Outside of law school I spend time with my husband and three kids, go boating, and swim on a master's swim team. I love the friendliness and active nature of Seattle community residents, the diverse opportunities available in the area, and the beautiful landscape.

What advice would you offer a prospective law student?

I would advise a prospective law student to connect with current Seattle U School of Law students as well as graduates to learn as much as you can, and then just go ahead and apply!

The Seattle U School of Law community is so friendly, supportive, and committed to student education and career success. Having been through a PhD program prior to law school, I know the level of support and commitment to success provided at Seattle U School of Law is not common among all graduate school programs. My experience at Seattle U so far makes me feel confident I am in the right place and will succeed.
