The Access Admission program helps students adjust to the demands of law school in a supportive atmosphere. Programming extends beyond the summer Criminal Law course available to all incoming students to include professional development workshops, networking, and academic skill development that equip students for success.
- Duration: 6 weeks
- Integrated four-credit course combines instruction in criminal law, academic skills, legal writing, and professional development. Successful completion of this course means you can take fewer credits during the spring semester.
- Criminal Law and Academic Skills
- Meets 3-4 hours per day, Monday through Friday.
- Helps you understand the way law is taught in law school.
- Includes instruction on case briefing, outlining, exam analysis, and exam writing.
- Your learning will take place in class, in small-group break-out sessions, and individually with the Academic Excellence and Bar Success Team.
- Legal Writing
- Meets twice each week for 90 minutes.
- You will develop legal reading, analysis, and writing skills using Washington criminal statutes and cases.
- Professional Development
- Attend presentations by Center for Professional Development staff on topics such as writing cover letters and resumes, interviewing strategies, and effective networking.
- Interact with Access Admission alumni, learning about their practice areas.
- Attend a round of speed interviews with members of the Washington State Bar Association’s Diversity Committee.
- Participate in a mock interview with Access Admission alumni.
- Visit with leaders of the Washington State legal community, including State Supreme Court justices.
