Kids in Need of Defense (KIND), the leading international non-governmental organization devoted to the protection of unaccompanied and separated children, and which relied on this funding for its operations, has been forced to lay off hundreds of staff attorneys and support staff, including in its Seattle field office, which is slated to close. As a result, the organization must withdraw from hundreds of cases in Washington state, leaving their clients vulnerable to detention and deportation.
To respond to this crisis, Seattle University School of Law is working with KIND’s Seattle office to recruit area attorneys to partner with our law students to form pro bono legal teams. The goal is for them to step in and represent youth who will otherwise proceed without counsel. Pro bono attorneys who participate will receive ample support, including:
Participating students can pursue externship credit and pro bono hours for working with pro bono attorneys on these cases.
No practice experience in immigration law or child welfare/family law is required to participate in this program. Attorneys only need a willingness to learn and available time to devote to cases.
