Emphasis on practical skills – Benefit from Seattle U Law’s highly-ranked Legal Writing program to learn writing and oral advocacy skills that are crucial to a successful legal practice.

Experiential learning opportunities - Enhance your legal education with clinics and externships, which help you develop and refine practical legal skills and knowledge, setting you up to hit the ground running when you graduate. These experiences can be pursued throughout your career as a law student, with some online-only options to provide maximum flexibility.

  • The courses in our Clinic program — ranked in the Top 25 by U.S. News and World Report — allow you to serve actual clients on real cases in a variety of legal areas, including Immigration, Workers’ Rights, Juvenile Justice and many more. This program allows students to learn from faculty who are nationally recognized for their excellence as teachers and scholars.
  • With more than 500 field sites, our Externship program enables you to gain valuable work experience and explore career options in a well-supervised environment. Choose from placements with courts, prosecutor and public defender offices, government agencies, human rights organizations, in-house counsel, and many others. Flex JD students will be eligible for externships beginning the spring semester of their second year. Please note that some sites require that students be in their third year of law school and/or be Rule 9 eligible.

1 Graduates of the Flex JD Program will be eligible to sit for the bar exam in most jurisdictions. However, Seattle U Law has identified a few states, including New York, in which the Flex JD format does not meet their current educational requisites. Applicants should be aware that bar eligibility, admission rules, and rule interpretations can change and are encouraged to contact any jurisdiction in which they intend to seek admission to determine requirements. Addresses for all relevant agencies are available through the National Conference of Bar Examiners.
