Deborah Ahrens
Class of Professor of Law
"Law school has a steep learning curve at the beginning – getting comfortable reading cases and understanding what they reflect about substantive law and legal processes takes time, An advantage of taking Criminal Law over the summer is that you are experiencing that learning curve in only one class, and can start your full roster of fall courses having mastered many of the skills that will ensure success in your other classes. Focusing on one course also helps you get comfortable participating in the law school classroom and making the most of class lectures and discussions, and give you confidence that you bring into your 1L year.
I enjoy teaching students their first law school class because I want them to see that learning the law is as interesting as it is challenging, and while I concede some bias from my prior career as a criminal defense attorney, I think Criminal Law is as interesting as the law can get."
