Externship Description

The Medical-Legal Partnership is collaboration among clinicians, social workers, and attorneys to address the unmet legal needs of patients and families. The program serves children and families from the Boston medical Center Pediatrics, Geriatrics and Cancer Care. MLP | Boston also has partnerships with six community health centers and staffs a weekly legal clinic for two of the centers and provides mentorship to four large law firms that have adopted the other health centers and staffs legal clinics with pro-bono volunteers. The Boston based clinics and are dedicated to providing comprehensive health services to poor and un/under-insured families. The primary avenues by which MLP addresses unmet legal needs include: 1. Training health care workers and other stakeholders on advocacy issues effecting vulnerable families, enabling this constituent to identify potential legal issues and referrals; 2. Proving case consultation to providers and direct legal services to patient-families, up to and including full court representation when indicated; 3. Participating in systemic advocacy efforts that promote health and well-being. Under the general supervision of attorneys, externs at the Medical-Legal Partnership | Boston, provide legal and administrative assistance to program staff. Interns are responsible for management of cases from Boston Medical Center and health center legal clinics. Interns will perform the following tasks: legal research, case development, development of training materials, and administrative duties.
