Influential Voices: Dean Spade and Nikkita Oliver

5:00 p.m.  -  6:00 p.m.

As part of our Influential Voices signature speaker series, Professor Dean Spade will introduce his new book about mutual aid, described as "the radical act of caring for each other while working to change the world." Special guest Nikkita Oliver will join him in a discussion about how communities can support each other through crises like COVID-19 without relying on problematic and inconsistent government programs or charities.

This event will be held online via Zoom and YouTube live stream. ASL interpretation will be provided.

Dean Spade
Dean Spade is an Associate Professor at Seattle University School of Law, where he teaches courses on policing, imprisonment, gender, race, and social movements. Spade has spent over two decades working in social movements working to end prisons, borders, poverty, and war and support people trying to survive right now. In 2002, Spade founded the Sylvia Rivera Law Project, a nonprofit law collective that provides free legal services to transgender, intersex and gender non-conforming people who are low-income and/or people of color, and which operates on a collective governance model.

Nikkita Oliver
Nikkita Oliver (they/them) is a Seattle-based creative, community organizer, abolitionist, educator, and attorney. Working at the intersections of arts, law, education, and community organizing, Oliver strives to create experiences which draw us closer to our humanity and invites us to imagine what we hope to see in the future. Oliver is the co-executive director of Creative Justice, an arts-based alternative to incarceration and a healing engaged youth-led community-based program.
