Legal Writing's National Ranking
March 16, 2016
Seattle University School of Law's Legal Writing Program was once again ranked by U.S. News & World Report as #1 in the country. Our Legal Writing Program has been ranked in the top two for as long as the rankings have existed.
These rankings come from a national survey of faculty who teach in the field. Faculty from other law schools commended Seattle University School of Law for its three-semester program, for the quality of the professors who teach in the program, for its early inclusion of a full-time writing advisor to the program, and for the program's thoughtful and innovative curriculum.
Law School Dean Annette Clark also praised the Legal Writing Program, its faculty, and the preparation it gives our students: "As an alumna, I can speak firsthand to the extraordinarily high quality of the Legal Writing Program and its faculty. When I go out into the legal community, I regularly hear from employers that our students and graduates stand out due to their excellent research and writing abilities. Our graduates' lawyering success is a testament both to their hard work and to the highly skilled Legal Writing faculty who taught them."
The national reputation of the program actually goes back far beyond the official program rankings. In the 1980s and 1990s, our legal writing faculty organized and hosted many of the national conferences that highlighted the best practices for teaching legal writing. These same faculty members were also instrumental in the founding of the Legal Writing Institute, a non-profit national organization dedicated to improving legal writing teaching and scholarship, which now has more than 2,500 members. Several of the leading textbooks on legal writing have been authored by Seattle University legal writing professors, and Seattle University School of Law's legal writing faculty continue to be leaders nationally and even internationally in how to best teach legal writing.
Jason Amala '05, partner at Pfau Cochran Vertetis Amala PLLC, captured alumni reaction to the Legal Writing Program being named #1 in the country: "As an alum, I am so proud of Seattle U's Legal Writing Program and the national recognition it has earned. The legal writing faculty and curriculum were fantastic. They gave me the best possible preparation for practicing law. And when it comes to hiring law students, I believe the legal writing courses make our students stand out from the students at other law schools. That's what being #1 is really about."
