Summer Internships

Documentation Center of Cambodia (DC-Cam)

Phnom Penh, Cambodia

  • Created in 1995 by a group of scholars at Yale University, DC-Cam is an independent Cambodian NGO dedicated to ensuring memory and justice with respect to the abuses of the infamous Democratic Kampuchea (DK) regime.
  • In part as a result of their work, the United Nations and Government of Cambodia have created the Khmer Rouge Tribunal to prosecute certain former DK officials.
  • Each summer associate prepares an independent article related to the tribunal proceedings and the quest for justice and reconciliation in Cambodia.

Kenya Human Rights Commission

Nairobi, Kenya

  • KHRC is an independent non-governmental organization that campaigns for human rights and a democratic Kenya through monitoring, documenting and publicizing rights violations.
  • Linked to a network of 27 other human rights organizations throughout Kenya.
  • KHRC was on the forefront of the struggle for democracy in the 1990s and continues to use a variety of legal and advocacy tools to further human rights and democracy. Visit the website for additional information khrc.or.ke

International Commission of Jurists - Kenya Section

Nairobi, Kenya

  • ICJ-Kenya is an autonomous non-profit membership organization of the Geneva-based International Commission of Jurists.
  • Draws its members from the Kenyan Bar and Bench.
  • Focuses on four programmatic areas: Access to Justice; Democratization; Human Rights Protection; and International Cooperation.
  • Crucial to passage of Kenyan Constitution and is at the forefront of efforts to implement it

International Fellowship Opportunity

The Law School provides up to two $5,000 fellowships support a SU law student in a social justice internship outside of the United States. Students are responsible for identifying and securing placements with a suitable public interest organization. Professors Tom Antkowiak and Ron Slye, among others, are available to assist in identifying suitable organizations and in some cases facilitating a placement. Past recipients have worked at the University of Central America (in Nicaragua); the International Commission of Jurists (Kenya); the Kenya Human Rights Commission; and the Documentation Center of Cambodia.

Universidad Centroamericana (UCA) Legal Clinic

Managua, Nicaragua

  • UCA law school houses the pre-eminent law clinic in Central America. 
  • Interns work alongside Nicaraguan law students in the UCA law clinic on criminal, civil, labor and/or human rights cases.
  • Credit not available
  • Students must be reasonably fluent in Spanish to apply
