Overview

Seattle has emerged as a leading global hub for the technology industry. The city hosts a remarkable base of knowledge, talent, and opportunity that inspires our LLM in Innovation and Technology Law program. The program addresses the substantial need for a new cadre of legal service professionals who are well-trained in the underlying regulatory schemes and well-versed in the technological and strategic features that define the newest methods of doing business.

The program is intended for foreign-trained and US-trained attorneys who wish to focus their studies in the areas of privacy, cybersecurity, digital commerce, and financial technology. The program is 24 credits and may be attended full or part-time. Upon completion, students may be eligible to sit for the bar exam in Washington, California, and several other states.

Curriculum

The program curriculum places particular emphasis upon matters of privacy, cybersecurity, digital commerce, and financial technology. Students examine the interplay between technological innovation, complex legal doctrines and regulatory approaches, business and market models (both cutting-edge and traditional), and the various actors whose interests, perspectives, and goals affect the technology law landscape.

LLM students in this program are required to take four core courses, including:

  • Copyright Law
  • Cybersecurity and Data Breach: Legal and Practical Prevention and Response
  • Cybersecurity planning, incident response, and litigation
  • Foundations of Privacy Law
  • Intellectual Property
  • Internet Law and Digital Commerce
  • Internet Platforms: Policy and Litigation
  • Introduction to Financial Technology
  • Law Practice Technology and Ethics
  • Law, Technology, and Ethics in the Age of Innovation
  • Managing Privacy Risks
  • The Business of Intellectual Property
  • Trademark Law

In addition to the core requirement, students may choose from a number of elective courses. If students want to qualify to sit for a specific bar examination, they should take certain specific courses required by the state bar they wish to qualify for.

Please note that courses listed above may not be available or offered within a semester or an academic calendar year. The Academic Leadership reserves the right to schedule courses based upon demand and to ensure the curriculum remains relevant and responsive to the industry and emerging trends. You will have the opportunity to discuss your individual curriculum plan with your Program Director to ensure you achieve your academic goals and meet program requirements.
