Frequently Asked Questions about Law School Exams

Exam Schedule

Exam Codes

Each term, the Registrar generates a unique four-digit examination number to be used for all examinations taken during the Fall 2007 semester. You may view your exam code on SU Online. Please use this four-digit number in place of your name on all blue books, examination papers and any other anonymously graded course work. If you lose or forget your examination number and you are not able to log into SU Online please go to the Exam Office. Examination numbers will be given only upon presentation of valid identification (student ID, driver’s license, state ID, military ID or passport). Under no circumstances will examination numbers be given via telephone or e-mail.

Alternative Exams

It is within the discretion of an individual faculty member to offer an alternative examination date. Alternative exam dates must be within the regular examination period. If a faculty member is planning to offer an alternative exam date, the date and time of the alternate date will be announced in class. The Office of the Registrar must first clear the dates and times of all alternative exams. An Alternative Exam Date Request form is available at the Office of the Registrar. The Alternative Exam Date Request form must be circulated in class, students planning to take an exam on the alternative date must sign this list.

Accommodated Exams/Rescheduling an Exam

Students who have disabilities that require accommodation in the exam process or scheduling should discuss these requirements early in the semester with the Associate Dean for Student Affairs. Appropriate accommodation will be arranged on a case-by-case basis. Documentation of the disability will be required.

No student shall be required to take examinations during consecutive examinations periods (see Student Handbook). Rescheduled examinations must be taken during the next exam period in which no conflict exists between the first day and the last day of examinations. In rescheduling exams, other factors taken into consideration include the student's overall examination schedule, the availability of alternative examination dates and the availability of rooms and proctors. Examinations cannot be rescheduled for a date that precedes the scheduled date (or the alternative date, if applicable).

Students will be notified when examination conflict resolution forms are available. Conflict forms must be completed and returned to the Office of the Associate Dean for Student Affairs. Students will receive confirmation of the conflict resolution in their student mail boxes.

Using Your Laptop For Exams - SofTest

In order to use your lap top computer you must have properly installed the SofTest software. SofTest is a program that allows you to use your laptop as a simple word processor. At the same time it blocks access to any stored files during the exam administration. (If you are taking an open book exam, you MUST print out your notes prior to the exam. You will not have access to notes on your hard drive.)

You have received complete instructions on downloading the software by e-mail. You may download the software from www.examsoft.com/seattlelaw beginning Monday, October 29. The deadline for downloading the software is Friday, November 30. All SofTest users must be using Version 8.5 for Fall 2007 exams.

It is advisable to bring an ethernet cord with you to all exams. In the event that there are problems with the wireless network, an ethernet cord will enable you to upload your examination on time.

If you have difficulty downloading SofTest, please contact Ani Orantes in Administrative Computing (2nd floor of Administration area). Ms. Orantes can be reached at (206) 398-4138 or orantea@seattleu.edu.

Emergencies

If an emergency arises, or a student is so sick that s/he will be unable to sit for the examination, the student must contact the Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Donna Claxton Deming, at dcdeming@seattleu.edu or (206) 398-4307. Please remember that a request for accommodation must be supported by appropriate documentation.

Do not contact your professor. Faculty do not reschedule examinations and any attempt to contact a faculty member may jeopardize the anonymous grading system.

Questions? Contact the Examination Coordinator, Jamie Kitzman at 398-4154 or kitzmanj@seattleu.edu. During exam times the Exam Coordinator can be reached in the Exam Office, Room C3, at (206) 398-4331.
