Education Law Programs
Education Law Programs provides instruction, training and support in various aspects of education law to law students, attorneys, parents of children in school, education professionals and others involved in the educational decision-making process. Its initial focus has been in the area of special education. With the support and cooperation of area advocacy and disability organizations, it has organized and underwritten programs for parents of children with disabilities. It is also responsible for the IDEA ALJ/HO Academy, which has offered training to special education hearing officers.
5th Parent Advocacy Training Program: Bullying and Children with Disabilities; Mediation

The fifth parent advocacy training will offer two half-day sessions. The morning session will examine Bullying and Children with Disabilities and will be presented by James D. Gerl, an attorney and special education hearing officer for Alaska, Pennsylvania, Utah and Washington, D.C. The afternoon session on Mediation of Special Education Disputes will be presented by Greg Abell, Senior Partner of Sound Options Group LLP. Materials and refreshments will be provided. 4th Parent Advocacy Training Program: An Introduction to the Special Education Process

The fourth parent advocacy training program was a free webinar designed to provide a concise overview of the basic framework and procedures created by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The presenter was S. James Rosenfeld, Adjunct Professor and Director, Education Law Programs. The webinar, as well as materials used and distributed, are available here.
3rd Parent Advocacy Training Program: Understanding Assessments

This was the third in a series of training programs for parents of children with disabilities presented by the Seattle University School of Law and co-sponsored by Washington PAVE and The Arc of King County. This program offered parents the opportunity to ask a board certified clinical neuropsychologist, Wendy B. Marlowe, Ph.D., ABPP-CN, the questions they want answered as they try to address concerns about their child's development and progress in school. More information and materials here.
2nd Parent Advocacy Training Program: Post-Secondary Concerns

The Education Law Academy, in conjunction with Washington PAVE and The Arc of King County, held a second training for parents of children with disabilities. Presentations by representatives from The Dussault Law Group will focus on concerns arising following post-secondary education. Inasmuch as this program is intended for non-attorneys, no CLE credits were obtained for this program. More information here.
1st Parent Advocacy Training Program: Basic Advocacy Skills

The Education Law Academy, in conjunction with Washington PAVE and The Arc of King County, held a one-day training in basic advocacy skills for parents of children with disabilities. This was the first of a series of programs focusing on programming and services for children with disabilities, from pre-school through post-secondary education. Inasmuch as this program is intended for non-attorneys, no CLE were sought for this program. More information here.
